A 7.4 hectare sanctuary was established at Corella, where some 100 tarsiers are kept in a spacious netted natural habitat enclosure, for feeding, captive breeding and display. Tarsiers out side the display area are free to safely roam the natural forest of the sanctuary grounds, protected by an encircling 2.2m fence. Other Bohol municipalities with tarsier populations are being encouraged to follow suit.

The Philippine Flying Lemur (Cynocephalus Volans) is also know locally as the Colugos.

The Colugos is a shy, arboreal, nocturnal gliding mammal, resembling a lemur, native to the tropical lowlands of the Philippines. Fully grown it ranges in length from about 35 to 45 cm, plus a 30cm long tail and weighs between 1 and 2 kilograms. A membrane (or patagium) stretching from the forelimb to the tail allows the animal to glide up to 70metres from tree to tree. They are surprisingly clumsy climbers, and proceed in a series of slow hops, gripping onto branches with their small sharp claws. The Colugos sleeps during the day, generally suspended inconspicuously from under a branch or curled up in a tree hollow. A herbivore, the Colugos forges for food at dusk, which is thought to be made up of leaves, fruit, shoots, flowers and sap. The female has a gestation period of about 60 days and will give birth to one or two young, which do not reach full maturity until two or three years of age.

The IUCN has classified the Colugos as vulnerable due to habitation loss and hunting for it’s meat and fur. Studies have also revealed that the Colugos makes up approximately 90% of the gravely endangered Philippine Eagle’s diet.

Sadly, the diminutive, shy, sensitive and endangered Philippine Tarsier, continues to be fragrantly exploited by greedy short-sighted promoters, in spite of recent laws committed to attempt ensuring their survival.

Model release. Visiting Zoology research student, Irene Arboleda from the University of Adelaide, conducts home range, spatial movements and habitat associations of the Philippine Tarsier at the Philippines Tarsier Foundation’s, 7.4 hectare sanctuary located at Corella, Bohol, the Philippines.

Recent studies show that the male Philippine Tarsier has a home range averaging 6.45 hectares, while that for the female is 2.45 hectares, allowing a density of 16 male and 41 female tarsiers per 100 hectare. Research also shows that the Philippine Tarsier prefer dense, low-level vegetation in secondary forest, with perching sites averaging 2 meters above the ground. While both female and male tarsiers are solitary animals, they cross each other’s paths under the cover of nightfall as they hunt for prey. The diminutive tarsier can travel up to 1.5 kilometres across the jungle, their optimal ranging area being approximately 6 hectares.
