Model release. Neria Saranillo, operates a private captive tarsier display along the banks of the Luboc, River in Loboc town. It is more conveniently situated on the principal road to Bohol’s famous tourist attraction of the Chocolate Hills, than the Government sanctioned Tarsier Foundation’s sanctuary at Corella. Here tourist can get to see the Philippine Tarsier up close and personal and take pictures, but are not allowed to touch them. These shy and sensitive creatures are semi-captive and kept in cages. Although released at night to hunt for food, they lead stressful lives being woken up during the day to perform for tourists and consequently do not live very long. By virtue of the tarsier’s protected status, flagrant private displays like this one at Luboc, are contrary to the ban on their possession and only serve to further encourage in their trading as pets.

Model release. Neria Saranillo, operator of a private captive tarsier display at Luboc, Bohol sells to passing tourists fake fur tarsier trinkets. Not more than 20 years ago, the souvenirs being sold were actually stuffed tarsiers. Fortunately, the grisly practice has since effectively ceased, although in a country like the Philippines where the law is frequently flouted, a brisk illegal pet trade in these shy creatures still persists.
